Salmon Arrive At Riggins Idaho
(check your salmon gear and be ready for improving conditions)
The salmon are starting to arrive at Rapid River Fish Hatchery. As of 5/24/2009 12 adults and 2 jacks were at the trap. The little salmon River is high and murky but it is fishable while the main salmon at Riggins Idaho is just a couple of feet below flood stage and looks like a chocolate shake salmon fishing will be difficult to near impossible over the next couple of days.
I took a trip down to Riggins Saturday May 23, 2009 and was disappointed to see the river in its current condition. I did not fish much because the river was so high and muddy although I did see a salmon angler up stream from me hook and land a nice salmon.
Right now it is going to be a waiting game to see if the river will recede any and clear up some. With flash flood warning posted it may take awhile before we see any major improvements in the river condition though.
The salmon seem to be here it is just finding a spot that is fishable right now that will be a major challenge.
Now would be a good time to go through your salmon gear and clean and oil your rods and reels. You may want to take an inventory as to what you need to stock up on before you make the trip to Riggins. You do not want to be on the river and realize that you are short several important items. It is always a good idea to re-spool your reels with fresh line before you head out also. With the river running high and fast combined with the power of the salmon you do not to be caught with weak spots in your line. Make sure your drag is working as well you are going to need your equipment performing at its peak if you want to land one of Idaho’s powerful Chinook Salmon this season.
